This is what you should look for when buying a security system

The large number of different security systems on the market and the sometimes very different equipment packages make it difficult for newcomers to find the right burglar protection. It is therefore advisable to take a look at some basic criteria in order to define your own needs and to choose a suitable burglar protection.

  • Security system: Basically, all security systems are designed to detect unauthorized intruders and sound the alarm accordingly. However, different manufacturers use different techniques. Many providers use motion detectors and door and window contacts to detect movements and vibrations. Some systems also allow the connection of surveillance cameras in order to directly document suspicious movements and thus to better clear up a break-in later. However, you have to like to install a video-based monitoring system in your own four walls, as this sometimes - depending on sensitivity and configuration - also records your own movements.
Alarm sirens, which drive away intruders with loud acoustic warning signals, are also useful. In many security systems, sirens for indoor and outdoor areas can be easily integrated.
  • Validation: Those who install burglar protection want to be able to rely on their security system without compromise. Many systems therefore have a battery function in order to bridge an accidental or deliberately caused power failure. Its own sabotage protection also triggers an alarm as soon as an attempt is made to switch off or manipulate the system.
  • Additional functions: Many modern alarm systems can do a lot more than just make noise. In some systems, for example, “dead areas” can be defined in which no alarm is triggered in the event of movement. Security systems that also cover the smart home area provide information on the status of the washing machine, for example, and detect water leaks in the basement. The sensor technology makes a wide variety of security scenarios possible.
  • Monthly charges: Many manufacturers charge extra monthly costs for additional functions, such as the use of extended app or cloud services, which are necessary, for example, for storing video recordings or for warnings on smartphones. In our comparison of the best security systems, the costs vary from the completely free system to monthly prices of 39 euros. In addition to the purchase price, the monthly costs should definitely be taken into account when buying in order to avoid unnecessarily high running costs.
  • Compatibility: Almost all security systems are designed in such a way that they are also compatible with other smart home products. For example, some systems can use the lamps from the Philips Hue intelligent lighting system as a warning light to protect against burglary. Some alarm systems also allow the window contacts to be used as a heating control. The heating control receives a message as soon as a window is opened and shuts down accordingly. Systems that are compatible with voice assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant are also pleasant, so that the burglar protection can be switched on and off by voice command.

Tip: The constantly growing range of additional functions can be tempting when buying one

1. Netgear Arlo Pro: Comprehensive video surveillance system with clear recordings

The technology group Netgear offers extensive monitoring and information options with its camera systems, which are often used in shops. The waterproof cameras not only offer a resolution in Full HD, with which even small details in the picture can be clearly seen, but also a good infrared image for night shots. Since the installation can be made completely cable-free, the Arlo system is ideal for anyone looking for an easy-to-install security system. However, it can also be used indoors.

The system, which consists of one or more surveillance cameras and a base station, offers, among other things, sound and motion detection, an integrated alarm of up to 100 decibels, and the possibility of communicating with visitors and postmen directly via the smartphone's camera. The control and monitoring of the system via the web portal or app is free of charge; for additional functions, such as storing videos over a period of more than seven days or package and vehicle detection, just under 3 euros per camera and month are due, from ten Cameras a flat rate of just under 10 euros.

Tip: The Arlo Pro 3 has only recently been available in stores. The successor to the Pro 2 offers
an image resolution of 2K, night vision in color and other optimizations. The starter set is included for this
two Arlo Pro 3s are around 200 euros more expensive than the Pro-2 set. Whether the additional functions really
are worth the extra price, remains a question of personal preferences.

Advantages:

  • very good picture quality
  • wireless installation possible
  • 100 percent waterproof
  • energy-independent power supply possible through solar panel

Disadvantage:

  • useful additional functions for a fee
  • Web portal can only be used with flash-compatible devices
  • no sabotage protection

Reviews:

  • “The Arlo 2 is impressively powerful for a cloud-based surveillance camera. However, if you want to use the system sensibly, you will have to book a fee-based tariff. The 7 days of storage in the free basic tariff are just enough for a short vacation. "(Techstage, 02/2019)
  • “I absolutely loved the possibility of using the Arlo Pro 2 freely and independently of a voltage source. Once charged, the batteries used enable a running time of around 100 days (extrapolated and depending on usage). "(Heimwerker.de)

2. Lupusec XT1: Professional security system with 24/7 service

The starter pack from the German company Lupus Electronics consists of a base station, a motion sensor and a door and window contact. A number of other components such as hazard detectors, sirens, cameras, heating, roller shutter and light controls and monitoring tools can also be integrated into the system. Lupus Electronics is thus an all-in-one solution for the entire smart home. The components can be set up easily via the app, but a DynDNS service must first be set up, which can be quite a challenge for non-technical experts.

From a data protection point of view, however, setting up the server is very much in favor, as not all data will then run through the provider's server. If you want to get maximum security, you can connect the XT1 to a monitoring center using the "Lupusec 24" service. There the system is permanently monitored by employees. If an alarm is triggered, the control center tries to contact the homeowner via SMS or telephone. Under certain circumstances, however, a company employee will also be sent to check that everything is on site. This service costs up to 39 euros per month.

Reading tip: Here you can find out more about the latest state-sponsored Lupusec XT3.

Advantages:

  • wide variety of components available
  • high data protection standard through DynDNS
  • 24/7 service for professional surveillance

Disadvantage:

  • cumbersome initial setup
  • extensive configuration options, possibly very complicated

Reviews:

  • “The LUPUSEC-XT1 smart home alarm system (starter pack) achieved the top rating of“ very good ”with 92.8 percent and is already convincing with its high material quality and flawless workmanship. Above all, however, it fulfills its main purpose flawlessly, namely the reliable and immediate alarming by means of a siren. "- Test winner (ETM test magazine, 10/2015)
  • “With the Lupusec-XT1 Plus Starter Pack for around 330 euros, you can make your home safer - and smarter. The smart alarm system was quite easy to install in our practical tip. However, you have to invest a lot of time in setting up and operating the very complex interface. "(Chip, 10/2018)
  • “As far as the set-up comfort (DyDNS, mail servers) is concerned, as well as the costs - the Lupusec system and also the modules are not cheap - the Lupusec-XT1-Plus-System is certainly somewhat inferior to other smart home systems. In return, however, this plays in a completely different league in terms of professionalism, security and data protection. "(Techtest, 12/2018)

3. Egardia: security system with smart home interface

A complete alarm system that can be installed in less than 30 minutes is promised by the Dutch company Egardia. What is striking about the starter kit is the large scope of delivery, which, in addition to the base station with integrated siren and emergency battery, also includes a remote control, a wall control unit, two motion detectors and an opening detector. Additional components can be purchased at a relatively low price and integrated into the system. The system can be controlled via the browser and the Egardia app, and operation is simple and straightforward.

The catch: Without a subscription of 8.95 euros per month, almost no functions can be used. The siren function, control via remote control and app (from near and far) and push notifications in the event of an alarm are free of charge. Other features, such as automatic function monitoring, the use of the radio-controlled socket or alerting a contact person via email or SMS, are chargeable. In addition, the Smart Home link service Conrad Connect is only supported in subscription mode.

This not insignificant functional restriction also explains the relatively poor evaluation result of Egardia by private testers. However, if you are willing to invest the monthly amount, you will receive a system with a large scope and easy handling, which, thanks to its compatibility with Conrad Connect, can be linked to many smart home devices and systems.

Advantages:

  • expandable with many inexpensive components
  • easy installation
  • Compatible with Conrad Connect for integration into the smart home
  • Protection in the event of a power failure (up to 8 hours)

Disadvantage:

  • many functions are chargeable

Reviews:

  • “The Egardia Smart Home alarm system convinced in the test as a comprehensive, well thought-out and reliable partner for home security. The setup is quick and easy, even for laypeople "(Chip, 01/2016)
  • "The Egardia alarm system is ideal for users who want to secure their home from burglary and want an alarm system that is easy to install." - Test winner 9.1 / 10 (Netzsieger, 01/2019)

4. Abus Z-Wave: Powerful security system for large houses

The Z-Wave starter set from the German security professional Abus includes a base station, a door or window contact, a siren and a multi-sensor (with integrated motion detector, light sensor, thermometer and hygrometer). A total of up to 120 components can interact in a Z-Wave system. The setup with the help of the Z-Wave One app should be easy thanks to the great clarity, even for those who are not technical. Overall, Abus manages to combine the various setting options of the system with ease of use.

It is also interesting to have the option of programming over 60 different scenarios using the if-then principle so that the behavior of the system can be well adapted to personal needs. However, there are also limits to the possible uses. The Z-Wave system is currently not compatible with Philips Hue, but with other smart lighting systems such as Aeotec or Zipato. In addition, only one surveillance camera can be integrated into the Abus Smarvest system.

The fact that Abus, as a German manufacturer, is particularly sensitive to the local data protection regulations should also be important to many users. In addition, all Z-Wave devices can also be used as repeaters for other smart home devices, which increases both the range and the stability of the security network.

Note: While the Abus Z-Wave system was primarily designed for indoor use, the

Advantages:

  • own radio standard
  • clear app design
  • 60 different scenarios can be set
  • high data protection standard
  • no chargeable additional functions

Disadvantage:

  • no camera available
  • not compatible with Philips Hue
  • Power failure protection only 5 minutes

5. Gigaset Elements M: remote monitoring of relatives

When you hear Gigaset, you immediately think of the telephone. The individual components of the Giga-Elements system actually communicate using the DECT telephone standard. The cheapest system in our comparison also offers the largest entry-level package (base station, door sensor, motion sensor, siren, two window sensors). Unfortunately, setting up the system is a bit cumbersome due to the inconvenient cable routing at the base station. For the installation, it is also absolutely necessary to open an account with the manufacturer, which is rather critical with regard to data protection. In other respects, too, learning the sensors is quite laborious, the description leaves some questions unanswered. This is also the main reason why the burglar protection only gets a mediocre rating in tests and reviews.

Once the system has been installed, however, it works quickly and reliably - as long as the power does not fail, as there is no backup in the event of a power failure. The Gigaset security package is also interesting for the remote monitoring of senior citizens, because Gigaset offers a special app for relatives. It is easy to determine whether daily routines have changed or unusual activities indicate a break-in.

Advantages:

  • intelligent sensor technology
  • energy-saving DECT radio standard
  • Remote monitoring app

Disadvantage:

  • cumbersome initial setup
  • only works with an account with the manufacturer
  • no protection against power failure

Reviews:

  • “If the system is running, however, it can then display its advantages. The sensors have proven themselves in practice and seem to work reliably. "(Techstage, 01/2018)
  • "All in all, the Gigaset Elements system is a very sophisticated monitoring system for everyone." (Kriminalberatung.de, 2019)

Tip: KfW funding for security systems

In addition to public institutions, the Kreditgesellschaft für Wiederaufbau (KfW) also supports private individuals with renovation and renovation measures. The optimization of burglar protection, for example, by installing an alarm system or setting up smart applications with burglar alarm functions is supported by a KfW loan or a KfW subsidy for smart homes. Depending on the type and scope of the measure, a grant of up to 1,600 euros or a cheap loan up to a maximum funding amount of 50,000 euros is possible.

Extra tip: Make sure you apply for KfW funding before purchasing a security system.

Conclusion: smart security systems in a test comparison

Anyone who is willing to accept a more complex installation process will receive a solid and well-balanced security system with the Gigaset Elements at an excellent price-performance ratio. The installation of the Egardia is easier, but the monthly subscription price is annoying. The systems from Lupus Electronics and Abus offer excellent quality without the need for additional costs. If you want to catch the burglar in the act or scare off with a monitored property, the Arlo video surveillance system is the right choice.
