General

Jiraiya was one of the legendary Sannin. He was a student of Hiruzen Sarutobi, later the third Hokage, and Sensei of Minato Namikaze, later the fourth Hokage. He also devoured a fool of Naruto Uzumaki, because he is very similar to his youthful self and he is his godfather. He also got the nickname from him Ero-sennin - in the German version: horny / weird mountain hermit - got it. Jiraiya is also the author of the Flirtparadies novel series and always uses his job as an excuse when he watches beautiful women bathing: he says he should do research and come up with ideas for his new book.
Jiraiya himself says that there have been two situations in his life in which he almost died. In the first situation he was attacked by Tsunade, who had noticed that he had watched her bathing, and in the second by Naruto, who had formed the fourth tail.

Appearance

Jiraiya's appearance is less like that of a shinobi, much more that of a kabuki actor. He is a tall, strong man and has long white hair, which he has tied in a braid. Furthermore, instead of the Konoha headband, he wears a headband with the inscription "油" (oil). He also always has a large scroll with him that he carries on his back.

character

Jiraiya is actually quite a happy person, but when it comes to fighting, he is usually serious and focused on the situation. He is anything but a good role model: He drinks, he only thinks of women and wastes all his money: anything but an exemplary shinobi. He is also a very strict teacher. When he taught Naruto the Rasengan, he did not give him any help, because he is of the opinion that you can only master techniques if you have learned them yourself, and not if you have been told everything. But when Naruto got a step further, he was always happy. Jiraiya has always developed a close relationship with his students. He had developed a close relationship with Minato because he was his former student and he made him his godfather to Naruto, and to Naruto because he sees a lot of himself in Naruto. The relationship he had with Orochimaru is comparable to that of Naruto with Sasuke.
Even if Jiraiya never says this directly to Naruto, Jiraiya is as proud of Naruto as he is of a son of his own, whom he never had. Behind Jiraiya's funny, lively and exuberant facade hides a kind-hearted, ambitious and emotional man. This is particularly evident when he takes care of the war orphans Nagato, Konan and Yahiko by first helping them to take care of themselves and later - after he discovers Nagato's Rin'negan - teaching them ninja techniques.

childhood

Jiraiya was born in Konohagakure 50 years before the start of the action. He graduated from the academy at the age of six, became a genin and formed a team with Orochimaru, Tsunade and Hiruzen Sarutobi as sensei. Even as a child, Jiraiya was interested in women and always wanted to meet Tsunade, but she always turned him off. He also began a rivalry with Orochimaru in his childhood, which never changed until their final fight. It is not known whether Jiraiya grew up without parents, but this can be assumed as he never said anything about her.

Relationship with Orochimaru

The relationship between Jiraiya and Orochimaru was the same as that of Naruto and Sasuke. Orochimaru has always been considered a genius and Jiraiya a clumsy man. Jiraiya also had a big mouth and always shouted that he was much better than Orochimaru when he wanted to. In fact, there was always some kind of rivalry between Jiraiya and Orochimaru, but they were actually friends, just not ready to admit it. As with Naruto and Sasuke, there was one final fight between the two friends, which Orochimaru won.

Shinobi training

Training under Hiruzen

When Jiraiya became a genin at age six, he teamed up with Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Hiruzen Sarutobi as their sensei. His first test was the bell test. Just like Naruto, he too fell into every obvious trap. At the end of the exam, he was the one who couldn't get hold of a bell and was tied to a tree. While Orochimaru and Tsunade were allowed to leave, Jiraiya was to stay. Hiruzen wanted to know why Jiraiya always makes such an idiot and said that he should take an example from Orochimaru. Hiruzen said that if he wants to get stronger, he has to train harder. In the course of the training there were always different training methods, such as tree walking and running over water for chakra control. But Jiraiya kept losing control of his chakra. But after a certain period of time, Jiraiya made progress from one training session to another. Even Hiruzen was astonished by this. This was due to his parallel training in another world.

This information only occurs in the anime:

Training in the realm of the toads

After Jiraiya used the Kuchiyose no Jutsu without having signed a contract, he ended up at Myoubokuzan. There he got to know Gamabunta and Fukasaku. Fukasaku had already expected him, because according to a prophecy of the oogama sennin, a human child should soon land on Toad Mountain. Fukasaku decided to teach Jiraiya the arts of toads.
Jiraiya learned not to move a muscle, to get strength from nature and thus to lift large boulders, and in the end he made a contract with the toads. All of this also led to success in training under his Sensei Hiruzen. Jiraiya was trained until he was a young man. Then he had to interrupt his training because the oogam sennin had another prophecy.

The prophecy of the Oogamasennin

In the middle of the training, Jiraiya was called to the great Oogama Sennin, because he again had a prophecy that was about Jiraiya. It said that Jiraiya would travel the world and write a book. Jiraiya would also train the chosen child who will either bring peace or war to the shinobi world. When Jiraiya asked if his prophecies had ever come true, he said it had never happened before. Jiraiya believed in this prophecy and got ready to start his journey and search for the child of the prophecy.

plot

Jiraiya's Journey - Part 1

After hearing the prophecy, Jiraiya went in search of the prophecy's child a little later. During his journey, however, the peace between the five great Shinobi nations began to grow fragile. The time was marked by struggle and suffering. On his journey he met various Shinobi who wanted to get through the war in various ways. Everyone had their job during the war. As it turned out later, six of these shinobi were all bodies of Jiraiya's later opponent Pain. During his trip he was called to war by Konoha and so went to the battlefields with his two teammates.

Second Shinobi World War

At the time of the Second Shinobi World War, Jiraiya already held the rank of Jonin. Together with Orochimaru and Tsunade they were an unbeatable team. They were superior to many of their opponents. Shortly before the end of the war, they met Amegakure's leader, Hanzou. This involved the three in a fight, but even the three of them had no chance. Based on Hanzou's suspicion that Konoha would win the war, he spared the three, but gave all three the title the legendary sannin of Konoha and from that day on they should call themselves that.

Shortly afterwards, when the team was resting, they met three orphans. Tsunade was skeptical of the children, but they just wanted something to eat. Tsunade and Jiraiya gave them something to eat. The three chased the team and Orochimaru tried to kill them. But the children only had one request. They wanted them to teach them nin-jutsu so that they could at least defend themselves. Since Jiraiya felt guilty that the great nations were responsible for this war that killed the children's parents, he took the three in and taught them. One day there was an incident. A chunin from Iwagakure assaulted the three of them while they were training while Jiraiya was in the house. When he was out to help, the Chunin was already dead. He realized that Nagato had the most powerful eye technology, the Rin'negan. Jiraiya immediately recognized the child of prophecy in him. For the next three years he trained the three of them until they were able to defend themselves. Farewell was difficult for him, but he was able to leave the three of them alone with a clear conscience. Jiraiya now thought that she had found the child of prophecy. But at the end of the war he got a message that all three had been killed, which later turned out to be a false report. Jiraiya was devastated that he had not yet found the Child of Prophecy, so he decided to continue traveling after the war. For the time being, however, Jiraiya stayed in Konoha and taught the later fourth Hokage. He had a very great talent, which was enormously promoted by Jiraiya. After his time as a sensei, however, he went traveling again.

Jiraiya's Journey - Part 2

For the second half of his journey, Jiraiya was still looking for the prophecy child. However, he wrote many books during the trip, including the book "The Legend of the Brave Ninjas". He also experienced many adventures on this trip, but did not find what he was looking for. When he paid a visit to his former student Minato, he was reading the book "The Legend of the Courageous Ninjas". He liked the book so much that he and his friend Kushina Uzumaki wanted to name their unborn son after the main character of the book: Naruto. This made Jiraiya something like his godfather, but Minato had no problem with that because he had a very good relationship with his sensei.

After Jiraiya learned that Orochimaru had joined an organization called Akatsuki, he has been researching that organization ever since.

Meeting with Naruto

Jiraiya first met Naruto a month before the final round of the Chunin Hot Spring Qualifying Exam. Naruto was practicing walking on the water there with Ebisu. Ebisu caught Jiraiya watching women bathe and attacked him for it. Jiraiya easily repelled Ebisu's attack by summoning a toad with Kuchiyose no Jutsu, which Ebisu grabbed by the legs and hit him on the ground. Impressed by the attack, Naruto immediately decided that Jiraiya should oversee his training. However, at first he didn't have the slightest desire to do so. It was only when Naruto used his Oiroke no Jutsu that he convinced Jiraiya to monitor his training.
Jiraiya noticed that the seal that regulated Naruto's chakra and the chakra of Kyuubi had been changed. As a result, Naruto could not access the chakra of Kyuubi and could not build up a reasonable chakra himself, but Jiraiya reversed the change. This enabled Naruto to better control the Kyuubi's chakra and his own. After a few tries, Naruto got the hang of it and was finally able to walk across the water.
In the further course of the training, Jiraiya taught Naruto how to use the Kuchiyose no Jutsu and the kyuubi chakra. But even with this training he hardly gave Naruto any help. Because of this, Naruto was able to use the Kyuubi chakra to call out Gamabunta for the first time when Jiraiya threw him down a cliff to force Naruto to use the Kyuubi chakra when his own was not enough.

Looking for Tsunade

After the attack by Otogakure and Sunagakure on Konohagakure, Jiraiya set out with Naruto to find Tsunade, as she was to become the Godaime Hokage. When the two arrived in the first city, Jiraiya was led away from Naruto by a woman who was controlled by Itachi Uchiha using a gene jutsu. Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki wanted to kidnap Naruto to gain the power of Kyuubi. Shortly before their escape, Sasuke Uchiha also arrived to fight Itachi. Itachi quickly finished him off with his Mangekyou Sharingan. But then Jiraiya arrived and used his technique Kuchiyose: Gamaguchi Shibari. This technique conjures up the esophagus of a mountain toad. The user is then able to hide himself or other people in the wall of the esophagus (this is how Jiraiya brings Sasuke to safety) and to crush his opponents with the walls. Itachi and Kisame noticed that even the two of them had no chance against Jiraiya and decided to flee. Itachi burned a hole with Amaterasu in Jiraiya's conjured wall of flesh. Itachi and Kisame were the first to escape this technique. Naruto and Jiraiya continued their mission, and Jiraiya explained to Naruto why he was attacked by Akatsuki and the danger posed by them.
During the course of the mission, Jiraiya taught Naruto the Rasengan, which only he and the Yondaime Hokage have been able to use so far. While Naruto tried to master the different levels of the Rasengan, Jiraiya wanted to go in search of information about Tsunade's whereabouts. However, he didn't do that at first, but pursued his hobby: women. It wasn't until Naruto managed to master the first stage of the Rasengan in his own way that he began to really seek information.
When Jiraiya and Naruto finally found Tsunade, Jiraiya tried to convince the stubborn Tsunade that the Hokage weren't idiots just because they sacrificed themselves for their village. Jiraiya was then incapacitated by Tsunade with a poison so that he would not disrupt the negotiations between Orochimaru and Tsunade.

Fight against Orochimaru

After Jiraiya recovered from the poison, he, Naruto, and Shizune pursued Tsunade and Orochimaru. There was a fight between Tsunade and Kabuto Yakushi and Jiraiya and Orochimaru. While Kabuto took advantage of Tsunade's fear of blood to incapacitate her, Jiraiya and Orochimaru fought on the two immobile snakes of Orochimaru, which Jiraiya caused to sink half into the earth using the Doton: Yomi Numa technique. When Orochimaru stretched his neck to fatally injure Jiraiya in the neck, this ninpou: Hari Jizou used to protect himself, which he was only half able to do due to the still existing effects of the poison.
The fight went on and there was a big fight between the three legendary Sannin. Each of the three used the Kuchiyose no Jutsu to invoke their familiar spirits. Orochimaru conjured the giant snake Manda, Tsunade the nudibranch Katsuyu and Jiraiya the toad Gamabunta. In this fight, Jiraiya and Gamabunta used a combo attack in which Jiraiya breathes fire and Gamabunta breathes oil. This creates a huge flame with which they attack Manda. Ultimately, Manda is knocked out by Tsunade, who rammed Gamabunta's sword into Manda's mouth, making him unable to open it.
But then Orochimaru and Kabuto managed to escape.
