3 skills you need for the jobs of the future!
Last week the World Economic Forum published "The Future of Jobs Report". For this report, managers of almost 300 global companies from 26 countries were asked how job profiles are changing - which tasks and skills lose importance and which will be particularly important in the future. The results are interesting for everyone who still has a few years of work ahead of them, because they can be used to determine which skills we still develop and which job offers we should better accept. Jobs of the future: What tasks will machines take on in the future?
The executives surveyed expect that in 2025 machines and algorithms will take on significantly more tasks, especially in the areas of information processing and administration, than they do today: Speech recognition, documentation of meetings, automatic e-mail replies or digital assistants are examples that we already have to encounter. When it comes to physical work, too, executives assume that improved machines will take over jobs that were previously done by humans. For example because robots will be able to move not only in dust-free factory buildings, but also in the chaotic real world.
Nevertheless, there remains a large area in which the managers surveyed continue to see the competitive advantage with us humans: advise, decide, control, argue, communicate, interact - in these tasks, the expected shift from humans to intelligent machines is relatively small. And it is precisely these tasks that are extremely important for companies in times of high unpredictability and ambiguity. (These are the qualities that make a real team player - are you one?)
Jobs of the future: which skills will become more important?
When asked about the skills that job seekers should have in the future, there are two answers: First, there are a number of very specialized skills that are increasingly in demand in the course of technological changes. The managers surveyed by the World Economic Forum currently see software and web development as well as the use of cloud technology and artificial intelligence as central areas of the future.
Assessments of this kind are always strongly influenced by current trends, sometimes also by hypes. The statements on general skills are more robust. There are three groups in which the vast majority of the executives surveyed expect that they will be asked significantly more in 2025 than they are today:
Critical thinking: This means thinking beyond familiar and common solutions and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches - and also being able to present them so clearly that others are able to follow them logically. Critical thinking also means repeatedly questioning your own work - and that of others - critically in order to improve the results.
Complex problem solving: This means something other than solving a problem as quickly and precisely as possible. Rather, it is about behaving strategically in situations of high complexity, lack of transparency and dynamism. To be able to deal with the fact that there are several goals at the same time that have to be prioritized. Not wanting to process all the information, but rather to clear the thicket so that we can deal with the remaining section of reality. Thus, complex problem solving challenges us not only mentally, but also emotionally and socially.
Self management: Self-management is the ability to drive personal and professional development without constant feedback and support from others: to make plans for yourself and set goals - to recognize what knowledge you need to acquire and which tools you need to get hold of. What also belongs to it: The ability to postpone impulses and constantly pursue one's goals - and to be able to keep one's emotions in check and to remain calm in situations with high stress. Basically to be open to change. (Also interesting: you want to be more productive? Then forget about time management!)
Jobs of the future: which professions will be created?
When it comes to the question of the jobs of tomorrow, there are two perspectives: If you look at individual job profiles, according to the World Economic Forum, the majority of managers assume that fewer and fewer people will work in simple jobs in customer service, accounting and administration. At the same time, many new professions will emerge that require complex handling of data. For example, as a data analyst or machine learning programmer - but also as a cybersecurity expert, robotics engineer or specialist in the Internet of Things.
However, these statements are also strongly influenced by today's perception. That is why it is worth looking at so-called job clusters. Such groups of jobs that require similar skills allow significantly more robust statements than individual job profiles. One of these clusters is without question the handling of data and artificial intelligence. However, according to the analyzes of the World Economic Forum, clusters such as the health economy, ecological transformation, digital marketing or employee and organizational development will be at least as important. Therefore, my advice: do not be unsettled by supposed skills or professions of the future. Instead, think about how you can develop general skills like critical thinking, complex problem solving, and self-management. And maybe the next time you change jobs inside or outside your company, make sure that the job belongs to a cluster that is gaining in importance. Then the future will also work.
