India gets 29th state

The new state is called Telangana and has around 35 million inhabitants. The opponents are enraged that the economic center of Hyderabad Telangana has been slammed.

Bangkok / New Delhi. Cheers, fireworks and people dancing: the creation of a new federal state was celebrated in the Indian city of Hyderabad on Friday. The members of the upper house in Delhi had previously decided to found the new southern Indian state called Telangana.

India's 29th state will formally come into being as soon as President Pranab Mukherjee signs the relevant law, which is expected to happen shortly. For practical reasons, however, a few more weeks could pass before Telangana is actually founded.

Telangana will be created by splitting off ten out of 23 districts in the state of Andhra Pradesh and will have a population of around 35 million. Activists in the region have been fighting for a state of their own for more than 50 years. There have always been incidents. In the past few months, opponents in the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh have paralyzed public life several times. Last week a MP interrupted a session of the House of Commons by spraying pepper spray. Several MPs had to be dealt with.

Neglected region

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy resigned in protest on Wednesday. It is likely that the state will be placed under the direct control of the central government in Delhi for the time being. Telangana's opponents are concerned that Hyderabad, the current capital of Andhra Pradesh, will fall to Telangana. Hyderabad is to be the capital of the two states for about ten years. During this time, Andhra Pradesh is to develop its own new capital.

Telangana is dominated by agriculture and is one of the least developed regions in India, although Hyderabad is an important economic center in Telangana. Telangana's supporters have long complained about the neglect of the region. (zas)
