Tiananmen Square is the symbol of the Chinese capital in many ways. The fourth largest city square in the world at 440,000 square meters has witnessed numerous important events in Chinese history. The square is also known as the scene of the Tian’anmen incident in 1976, when mourning for the late Prime Minister Zhou Enlai triggered peaceful protests, and for the Tian’anmen massacre of 1989.
