Why is compaction important in road construction

Sustainable and economical road construction with FDVK

In order to increase the quality in earthworks and road construction, systems for comprehensive dynamic compaction control (FDVK) are available, which control and document the compaction performance and compaction quality during the paving process. This enables rapid construction progress, high daily output and reliable quality.

The FDVK has been established in earthworks for many years and has also been anchored as a standard test method M 2 in the "Additional technical contract conditions and guidelines for earthworks in road construction (ZTV E-StB (FGSV 599)") since 2009. Leaflet FGSV 547) They range from a calibrated test and proof of compliance with the work instructions for method M 3 to so-called proof rolling and the control of compaction.

When paving asphalt, there are no official regulations for comprehensive compaction control. Nevertheless, the interest in the verifiability of the compression work is particularly great. High material and machine costs play a role, as does the fact that paving asphalt only offers one chance. If the material cannot be compacted sufficiently and homogeneously within the specified temperature window, subsequent compression is no longer possible. Milling out defective layers causes additional costs and additional use of machines. Long-lasting asphalt surfaces can only be achieved through comprehensive control of the compaction. Therefore, clients are increasingly demanding proof that the agreed properties of the asphalt layer have also been achieved.

Völkel Mikroelektronik GmbH, a leading manufacturer of compaction measurement technology, has developed an FDVK system that supports fast and perfect asphalt paving in three ways:
-It automatically records the transitions georeferenced and ready for documentation.
-It shows the roller driver the number, the effect and the traces of the transitions integrated in the work.
-it informs - with networked rollers - all those involved in the process about their own work results as well as about those of their colleagues. In this way, it is easy to consistently adhere to the agreed rolling pattern.

In the more than 45 years of its existence, Bickhardt Bau Aktiengesellschaft from Kirchheim in Hesse has grown from a traditional road and civil engineering company to a successful, nationwide active full-service provider for traffic route construction. The company thoroughly tested various FDVK systems and then decided on the “FDVK Navigator” system from Völkel Mikroelektronik GmbH.
Because Völkel develops and produces the entire product portfolio at the Münster location, control over the high quality is assured in all areas; Customer requests can be incorporated into the products at short notice. This proximity to the customer was just as decisive for Bickhardt Bau's decision as the demonstrable optimization in the creation of homogeneous surfaces and the process-reliable achievement of the target values.
The possibility of equipping single drum compactors and tandem rollers with the Völkel system, regardless of manufacturer, results in a wide range of applications in earthworks and asphalt construction. This allows the paving crews a high degree of flexibility in planning and handling the construction sites. The roller drivers rate the clarity and ease of use of the display in the cabin as a major advantage.
The Völkel FDVK Navigator has recently also integrated the asphalt paver into the network of rollers. In addition to the geoposition, the system records important data such as the surface temperature, the route, the working width and weather data. The delivery notes of the asphalt delivery are assigned geo-referenced.
