NYC.ID - Digital Identity for New York City’s Citizens

What is the NYC.ID?

The NYC.ID could be the city’s free digital identity and main email address basis for citizens in New York City.

NYC.ID could provide its benefits to New Yorkers from all walks of life. From being able to access NYC’s services to signing up for free memberships at zoos, museums and other cultural institutions throughout the five boroughs, the digital identity may open up a whole new world of possibilities for citizens, including online municipal services.

Similar to an ID card or a driver’s license, the NYC.ID could include the citizen’s name, address, birthday, height, eye color, signature and a photo. Additionally, each NYC.ID could have a unique ID number and expiration date. There are options to include other data such as gender, preferred language, organ donorship preferences and emergency contact information.

The New Yorkers identity can be difficult to define in the digital age, when it is easy to create and use multiple personalities online. Citizens explore how individuality can be expressed through technology and how our attachment to digital objects is changing. It can be fascinating how digital characters are used to create a sense of identity, whether it's gender, cultural or personal.

IDNYC is the new, free identification card for all new York City residents, which gives all of us the opportunity to show who we are — New Yorkers. As a government-issued photo identification card, IDNYC secures the peace of mind and access to city services that come from having recognized identification.
new York is expected to introduce the country’s largest municipalidentification program, issuing cards intended as a boon for undocumented immigrants, the homeless and others who strain to navigate the bureaucracy of city services and institutions without government-issued ID.
