How do you help people in need

8 ways you can help homeless people right now

The streets in the cities are empty due to the corona pandemic. However, those who cannot withdraw are people without shelter. At the same time, however, they belong to the greatest risk group, because many of them have serious health problems but little access to the health care system. In addition, it has just become even more difficult for many homeless people to be able to meet at least the basic needs - after all, nobody hears the request for some change or something to eat in empty streets.

That is why we would like to show you in this blog post how you can support homeless and needy people right now with monetary and material donations, through initiatives such as the # Soliküche, #hotelsforhomeless or the Schlafplatzorga, but also by becoming active yourself with gift fences or for the cold bus and through the Can support signing petitions.

1 | SUPPORT WITH A MONEY DONATION

NEEDED: MONEY DONATION FOR DAILY OPERATIONS

The Berliner Homeless Aid e.V. provides homeless people with a fresh meal and clothes during their relief tours, which continue even in Corona times.

If you would like to support the Berlin homeless support with a monetary donation, you can do this via betterplace.org or by transferring to the following account.

NEEDED: MONEY DONATION FOR STREET DONATION AND SOUP FOR THE HOMELESS

StrassenBLUES e.V. is a non-profit association from Hamburg that supports homeless people and humanity.

Usually you donate something to homeless people right on the street. Due to Corona, homeless people hardly receive any donations and can barely make ends meet. Therefore you can now hand in your donation virtually. Volunteer StrassenHELDEN then distribute these to the homeless in the form of € 20 banknotes or vouchers, so that they can be helped directly for the moment.

In addition, the association gives out a warm street SOUP and informs people on the street with a Corona info magazine. Would you like to support this project?

NEEDED: MONEY DONATION FOR ONGOING COSTS

The Ginsheim-Gustavsburger Tafel e.V. supplies people in need with food every day.

Like many other food banks across Germany, the food bank in Ginsheim-Gustavsburg has financial problems due to Corona. In order to reduce the risk of contagion to a minimum, the board does without the usual symbolic 2 euros for the food, but of course still has to cover the normal running costs. With everyone Donation helped the blackboard!

2 | Support with a donation in kind

NEEDED: DISPOSABLE CUPS, BOWLS AND CUTLERY, DISINFECTANTS, PACKAGED FOOD

The Berliner Homeless Aid e.V. provides homeless people with a fresh meal and clothes during its relief tours. Every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday the team is out and about with many volunteers. The tours are also continued in Corona times, but only by the core team and with special hygiene measures.

So that the team can offer their guests food and drinks to-go without creating closer contact, disposable cups, bowls and cutlery are required. Highly sought-after disinfectants and packaged foods (cans, pasta, etc.) would also be of great help.

Have you damaged so much food and disinfectants that your pantry bursts and you want to support the Berlin homeless aid? Then please donate! 🙂

3 | # SOLIC KITCHEN - BUY MEALS FOR THE HOUSELESS AND NEEDY

# SOLIKÜCHE HAMBURG

The Kitchen Guerilla is a mobile cooking unit and creative agency for food and drink from Hamburg.

At the beginning of the Corona crisis, they started the #SoliKüche, in which they prepare individually wrapped food packages for the homeless and the needy - each containing a full meal and fresh fruit.

Initially, the resources for this were made available by solidarity customers. However, because the situation has continued to worsen, they are now selling these soli-meal packages online for € 7. Numerous meals can be passed on to the needy and with a small amount of the sales price the existence of Kitchen Guerilla is secured and jobs are preserved.

# SOLIKÜCHE BERLIN

The food combine is a 25-year-old family business in Berlin-Mitte that had to temporarily close its restaurant due to the Corona crisis.

Following the example of the Kitchen Guerilla, you can now also buy meals for homeless and needy people via their online shop for € 7 and at the same time ensure the survival of the business.

In order to adapt the meals as best as possible, the Speiskombinat is in contact with contacts from various initiatives.

4 | “FEED” A GIFT FENCE OR OPEN IT YOURSELF

The corona pandemic is forcing more and more social facilities such as the blackboards, night cafes and soup kitchens to close to protect against infection. That is why there are now gift fences in many cities (the idea comes from the Hamburger Gabenzaun association), to which, among other things, food, clothing and hygiene items for homeless and poor people (well packaged) can be “attached”.

At gabenzaun.de you can see in which cities and districts there are such fences in the neighborhood and where which should be set up. You can also get tips here and download all templates for equipping the fence (e.g. rules in several languages) directly. If there is no donation fence in your area, you could build a new one in your neighborhood and enter it directly on gabenzaun.de!

5 | #HOTELSFORHOMELESS

StrassenBLUES e.V. is a non-profit association from Hamburg that supports homeless people and humanity.

Due to the corona pandemic, homeless people are currently particularly at risk, because emergency shelters with dozens of people in a confined space do not offer the required minimum distance and suitable retreat options. At the same time, thousands and thousands of hotel rooms are empty all over Germany. That is why the #hotelsforhomeless project was launched.

What can you do about it
This project is only possible with the support of the respective municipalities and social authorities. Therefore, contact your social services authority and ask the responsible persons for an opinion on the safe accommodation of homeless people in your city. Sign the associated petitions or share the club's pictures on social media using the hashtags #hotelsforhomeless and #letmebesafe.

6 | THE BED ORGA

TEMPORARY BEDS FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE AND MIGRANTS

Since 2014, the Schlafplatzorga has been trying to organize temporary accommodation with supporters for homeless, partly illegal migrants in Berlin.

Especially now these people are at the mercy of the virus and have nowhere really to withdraw. Because of the mix of many different people in the emergency shelters that are still open, there is also an increased risk of infection there.

If you have a free bed - no matter whether, a loft bed in the hallway, a sofa or a free room and no matter if only for one or a few nights, your help is very welcome.

You can easily make an offer to sleep by email or phone and further questions (also with regard to corona measures) will be answered with pleasure.

If you cannot offer a place to sleep, but still want to support the organization, you can do so in the form of a cash donation. Because in addition to finding places to sleep, the organization also supports some of those seeking protection in managing their rent, for which they are always looking for donations.

7 | KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOR THE REFRIGERATION BUS

The supply structure for the homeless has largely collapsed: soup kitchens, warming rooms and emergency shelters have closed. Sources of income such as begging or collecting bottles are eliminated. At the same time, it is not advisable to care for people centrally because of the risk of infection. Therefore, the Berlin City Mission decided to visit people decentrally during the day with their cold bus in order to provide them with what they need. For example, something warm for the stomach is important!

In order to reach as many people as possible, however, they need your help: Write a mail to[email protected] and let them know where the homeless are during the day, where they are camped, etc., so that the cold bus can go to these places in a targeted manner.

8 | SIGN PETITIONS

CLOSED TABLES - 100 EUROS IMMEDIATE AID FOR THE POOR IN THE CORONA CRISIS!

The federal government is currently doing everything it can to cope with the corona crisis with the help of fast and unbureaucratic aid packages. Unfortunately, this affects millions of people who needed help before the crisis and are now in even greater need.

Blackboards, soup kitchens, free lunch tables as well as free and cheap meals in daycare centers and schools must now close due to Corona. For the millions of people whose supply system from these facilities is collapsing, Germany now needs a Corona rescue package so that those in need can quickly get additional money for grocery shopping.

This is why the responsible federal ministers are now being appealed to, until the end of the crisis, to pay households in need 100 euros per person per month in addition to the basic security. Stand up for the #CoronaSurcharge by signing this petition!

IMMEDIATE DECENTRALIZED ACCOMMODATION OF ALL HOMELESS PEOPLE - BERLIN

Due to the corona pandemic, homeless people are currently particularly at risk, because emergency shelters with dozens of people in a confined space do not offer the required minimum distance and suitable retreat options. In addition, numerous facilities for cooling aid have already had to close or will close at the end of the cold season.

At the same time, thousands and thousands of hotel rooms are vacant all over Germany, which could offer opportunities for isolation and individual washing options.

Therefore, the AK-Wohnungsnot demands immediate hotel accommodation, the permission to issue hotel vouchers as cold support facilities, better protection of employees in cold support, immediate tests in the facilities and the quick acceptance of official applications.

IMMEDIATE DECENTRALIZED ACCOMMODATION OF ALL HOMELESS PEOPLE - HAMBURG

The colleagues from Hamburg from GoBanyo, the Hamburger Gabenzaun e.V., the Verein Leben im Abseits e.V. and many others also make even more extensive demands on the city of Hamburg. Support them in this!

#LEAVENOONEBEHIND: PREVENT THE CORONA DISASTER NOW - ALSO AT THE EXTERNAL BORDERS!

The media influence to a large extent which issues, particularly emergencies, are currently prevalent in the world. Due to Covid-19, the suffering of those seeking protection who experienced violence and humanitarian disasters has largely been forgotten. It is now immensely important that we all stick together according to the motto #leavenooonebehind, because Covid-19 does not differentiate according to skin color, religion or gender.

That is why the EU Commission and EU governments are calling for: 1. evacuation of the overcrowded refugee camps, 2. access to medical care for the homeless and refugees, and 3. humanitarian and financial support.
