Rare and expensive: the secrets of real perfumes
Creative idea of the fragrance designer
Pure perfume is not only defined by the concentration of the fragrance. "Rather, a pure perfume contains the entire creative idea of the fragrance designer," explains Marc vom Ende. He should know, after all, he is one of the few perfumers in Germany.
Basis for eau de toilette
In fact, “the heart, top and base notes are completely preserved in a pure perfume,” adds Elmar Keldenich, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Perfumeries. You have to know: “In classical perfume theory, pure perfume is used as the basis. An eau de parfum or eau de toilette, on the other hand, is only a supplement there, for example when the top note disappears, ”explains von Ende.
Perfume as a gift under the tree
But how do you find the right perfume as a gift? Going into the bathroom and seeing what the recipient has in the form of a scent is the easiest method, says Keldenich. However, if you want to give away a new perfume, you have to collect clues in a detective manner.
A body lotion with a coconut scent brings you on the right track, as does a passion for vanilla ice cream or a preference for basil when you eat, says Keldenich. "Because that indicates a weakness for herbaceous fragrances."
Advice on buying the new fragrance
“The be-all and end-all when buying a real perfume is expert advice,” says Martin Ruppmann, managing director of the VKE Cosmetics Association in Berlin. "You often don't find them in large chains that are more geared towards the basic range of eau de parfum and eau de toilette."
Instead, Ruppmann refers to small, specialized perfumeries.
Pure perfume from Chanel, Armani and Guerlain
But you don't just have to search a little for a suitable perfumery. “Today there aren't that many manufacturers who produce pure perfumes,” says Keldenich. “I immediately think of Chanel and Guerlain. Armani also has the Privé collection. "
Chanel, on the other hand, offers almost all fragrances also in the perfume variant - at sometimes steep prices: 900 milliliters of the Mademoiselle fragrance as “Parfum Les Grandes Extraits” costs 6,000 euros. However, this variant is also strictly limited.
Dab, don't spray
Like other real perfumes, this collector's item comes with a glass stopper. Because a pure perfume is dabbed and not sprayed. This is due to the fact that only a few drops are actually sufficient for an intense fragrance experience, says von Ende.
Only from specialist dealers with advice
Given the exclusivity of a pure perfume, it is not surprising that all kinds of counterfeits are in circulation. Keldenich believes that you can protect yourself against this by buying the luxury gift from authorized retailers. He explains: "High-quality perfumes may only be delivered to specialist shops that also offer advice."
Note the instruction leaflet
In addition, a look at the "package insert" protects against unpleasant surprises, as Ruppmann adds. “Even pure perfume is subject to the Cosmetics Ordinance. That is why all ingredients have to be made transparent - by the way, clearly legible and not in a mini font. "
If you want to give your fragrance gift a very special touch, opt for a so-called tailor-made perfume. This term conceals fragrance treasures that cannot be bought ready-made. Instead, the ingredients are mixed according to the wearer's preferences - which brings us back to detective research. dpa
