How do geology and GIS differ

Online Services - Geospatial Data and Maps on the Web

It is the goal of the state government to make as much data as possible of the state administration accessible via the Internet free of charge. As part of this open data strategy, GD NRW provides extensive data, maps and textual explanations on geology, raw materials, groundwater and soil free of charge on the Internet. This means that information about the subsurface can be called up faster than before and incorporated into planning for services of general interest. This is an asset for everyone - home builders, engineering firms, business and science

You can find a selection of our free maps and dates under:
Web Map Services, Web Feature Services, and ATOM Feeds.
All available services can be found in the state portal Open Data

Under the item Internet portals you will find another way of calling up geographic information. Here we have prepared geodata, for example on geothermal energy, for direct use and for better understanding. Most of these are predefined evaluations of the underlying geodata. All you need is an Internet browser, but no additional software.

Web Map Service, Web Feature Service and ATOM Feed

Web Map Service

A Web Map Service (WMS) graphically displays geodata on the Internet. The service offers the option of calling up maps and factual information either in a freely accessible map viewer (e.g. GEOportal.NRW or TIM-online NRW) or via an individual URL in the insert and visualize your own GIS application (e.g. ArcGIS). The maps are available in raster data format. Access to the underlying geospatial data and intersection with your own vector data is therefore not possible. The use of the WMS of the GD NRW is free of charge.

Terms of use for WMS:
Maps that the user has created using the retrieved data must be cited in publications, reports or statements with the data source and the retrieval date:
Name of the geodata service, Geological Service NRW, retrieval date.

In addition, the copyright and liability provisions apply.

Web Feature Service

A Web Feature Service (WFS) goes beyond the mere map display. Access to vector data is also possible here. The user can visualize, analyze or process this data in another form. The use of the WFS of the GD NRW is free of charge.

ATOM feed

An ATOM feed enables the download via a data container, e.g. B. ZIP file in which the data record is stored. The use of the ATOM feed of the GD NRW is free of charge.

Terms of use for WFS and ATOM-Feed:
Use is permitted in accordance with the "Data License Germany Version 2.0". On products that the user has created using the retrieved data, the data source must be cited with the retrieval date:
Name of the geodata service, Geological Service NRW, retrieval date.

Please note all other conditions of use and information on the source note under Data License Germany 2.0.
